Design for a 5-year heritage and culture strategy.
Design that blends modern and classic.
Warwickshire County Council’s Heritage and Culture team needed a fresh design for their five year strategy document.
It needed to balance the tension of “heritage in the present day”.
This insight heavily informed our approach. The agreed style feels dynamic, and engages the reader with a magazine-like presentation.
We avoided a modern modular grid in favour of a compound grid layout that offered flexibility to accommodate the different volumes of information in each section.
This keeps things orderly and allows room for flourishes like big drop caps that draw the reader to the start of the content, as they would’ve done in historic texts.
“Utopia Std Black” with its characterful serifs and “Roboto Light” with its modern feel were chosen for headlines and body copy respectively. This created a contrast between old and new, and variation of texture to the layout.
The final print was delivered by the county council’s print department in a square format, saddle stitched on uncoated stock. It is tactile, balances modern and classic sensibilities, and continues to feel fresh deep into its five year lifespan.
